Vasectomy
When you’ve had enough!
If you’re a man who’s done having children or don’t see kids in your future, you may want to consider this permanent surgical procedure. There are plenty of birth control options available today, but vasectomy ranks among the most effective ways to prevent pregnancy. In fact, the occurrence of pregnancy after vasectomy is only 1 in 1000, making this option much more reliable for Ogden patients than other forms including tubal ligation. That’s why over 500,000 men in the United States choose to have a vasectomy every year.
Vasectomy is a minor surgery for male sterilization that blocks a man’s sperm from reaching his semen that is ejaculated. Semen still ejaculates, but it no longer contains sperm that can impregnate a woman. After a vasectomy, the testes still produce sperm, but the sperm are absorbed by the body (this occurs naturally with some sperm whether or not a man has had a vasectomy.)
Vasectomy: What to Expect Before, During & After
Dr. Tyler Christensen is a board-certified Urologist who specializes in no-scalpel vasectomies. In this instructional video, he discusses preparation before a vasectomy, a description of the procedure, and how to safely recover afterward.
A Quick Snip, Minimally Invasive!
At Ogden Clinic, our Urology team proudly specializes in minimally-invasive vasectomies. We use innovative technology—not a sharp scalpel—to make a very small incision in the scrotum and snip the vans deferens (the tube that carries sperm to semen.) The patient is injected with a small amount of lidocaine solution before the procedure to minimize discomfort.
This outpatient male sterilization procedure at the Ogden Clinic takes less than a half hour to complete, and recovery is generally speedy as well. Following the procedure, patients should take it easy and stay off their feet for the rest of the day. One day following the procedure, men may begin walking and driving. Men can gradually introduce their normal activities in the proceeding days.
Vasectomy should be considered a permanent decision. While reversal is possible, it is a difficult and expensive microsurgery that is not always successful.
