Chronic Pain
Chronic pain is characterized as pain that has been persistent for six months or more. Symptoms of chronic pain span beyond the time that a normal recovery should be expected. The pain can range from a mild irritation that may cause you to refrain from one or more activities, to a persistent pain that can disable you from working or enjoying your everyday activities.
Chronic pain can stem from injury or develop from small, repetitive strains on the body during daily activities. Whatever the case may be, physical therapists at Ogden Clinic are trained to provide relief to chronic pain sufferers.
What can I expect during my initial evaluation?
Your physical therapist will first take time to understand your history of activities, the nature of the problem, and your own concerns. During your first visit, your physical therapist will also:
- Assess neuromuscular control
- Examine symptomatic tissues
- Identify movements and postures that increase or decrease pain
- Pin-point your deficits in strength and/or motion
- All of these activities help your physical therapist determine the cause of pain and the course of treatment you should follow.
How is chronic pain treated?
Depending on the nature of the pain, your physical therapist may use a variety of methods. Treatment frequently includes manual therapy and may combine other methods like therapeutic exercise, neuromuscular re-education, or even trigger point dry needling.
